Research Interests
Transmedia Artist working in the areas of Video, Photography, Film, Sculpture and Textiles
As an Artist working in multiple disciplines, my body of work includes pieces in the areas of Video, Audio, Photography, Film, Sculpture, Textiles, Painting and Music. While my interest remains high in all of these areas, my current areas of project development and construction are in the field of Art Video, split fairly evenly between multiple channel, sculptural pieces and single channel pieces. My work often deals with, but is not limited to: death, depression, deprivation, damnation and determination in my life and the lives of others around me. My work is usually very technology laden in its creation, presentation or in both aspects; on the other hand sometimes my work looks like it was created by a one-armed seven year old using a broken camera.
As an Artist with antisocial, hermit-like tendencies, my work does not see the outside world much, nor does the outside world see my work much. Contradictory to the stubborn, isolationist position I have held in the past, I will be attempting to help my work find a larger audience through exhibiting it in various venues in the near future. Up until this point in time my exhibitions have been extremely limited...

Research Interests
"Television is reality, and reality is less than television."
- Brian O'Blivion, Videodrome
I am interested in the exploration, rearrangement, and derangement of cultural debris. Found and original footage is presented as melodic or aggressive visual compositions that show the personal effects of the experiencing of Television and the Internet.
My subject matter deals with the act of watching and exposes the individual landscape that we each create in our viewing habits: disconnected narratives, memories of pop culture, the manifestations of a new social sub-consciousness and the changes in expressing shared experiences.
Biography
Raised outside of Toronto in Aurora, Ontario, Katie received her BFA with Honours from The University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, where she concentrated on video and sound. Currently she is attending Syracuse University in the program of Transmedia: Art Video. She has recently become co-director of a local independent gallery, Spark Contemporary ArtSpace.

Research Interests
Relationships, race/ethnicity, women’s health, community relations, heritage
I have a wide range of research interests, particularly in the areas of community, women’s health, and heritage. Although my formal education is in communications (more specifically, television production), throughout my adult life I worked primarily in the human services field, guiding and counseling youth and young adults through their issues and concerns. These interactions fostered my interest in the various life experiences that help us form our ever changing identities.
Current Research
Drawing upon documentary relics (photos, video, etc.), memories, and oral narratives, my work explores personal experience, particularly as it intersects with cultural norms and history. This idea of “personal” history represents experience that is often outside of, or excluded from “public” history. In the coming months, my research will examine various phases of the grieving process and how it effects time, space, perception and reality. Also, I will explore the mental, physical, and emotional changes women’s bodies experience as they mature, and how that impacts identity.
Selected Works
"Goin’ North" experimental memoir, 18 minutes, - a woman recounts her journey from the south to the northern promised land during the "Black Great Migration"
"Healing in parts" experimental, 4 minutes – Healing...

Artist Statement
My work spans the full spectrum of mixed media practice. Most often I incorporate video, performance, installation and audio. Presently I am working on various video projects at my studio in Syracuse, New York. My latest body of work delves into my identity as a woman as well as a daughter of a Cuban exile.
My current work focuses on my encounters as a woman raised by a woman
who fled the Castro regime in the 1960s. My entire childhood I was taught to detest Fidel Castro and his regime, but at the same time love the Cuba of my mother's past. My passion is embedded in an island I can never visit and never understand. My video work explores this confusion; in it I try to bond the Cuban stories of the past and present. I desire to inform my audience of my background and bridge a connection between my world and theirs for the reason that I believe that every experience is connected. I hope to impart understanding, emotion and awareness onto my audience.

Research Interests
Traditional video usually functions as a method of telling fictional or true stories while stimulating the sense of sight and sounds. Episodic aesthetic feelings or perceptions are emphasized in traditional video. Video art, on the other hand, encourages audiences to come up with meanings on their own instead of dictating an exact concept. Video artists can actually remind the audience of something deep inside and have them make associations with something in their own consciousness. Of course some audiences find it difficult to understand art work like this. Therefore, I concentrate my efforts on making video which is Òeasily-tasted;Ó video compositions which are easier for audiences to connect with. I collect symbols for all kinds of senses and organize and utilize them as elements of my video art. Also, I'm fascinated by the dynamic between human beings and concentrate my work on it. I observe people on the street, interact with them and collect footage in documentary form.

Research Interests
As a first generation Indian American, I find myself consistently returning to ideas of identity, expectations, and acceptance. The confusion I face is universal, extending beyond the South Asian community into other immigrant populations. Minority groups are rapidly expanding within ÔWestern' societies, increasing the cultural relevance of these issues. My work is a long-term documentation, from multiple perspectives, of my contentions with my heritage. Through further investigation, I hope to understand my role as a multiethnic female artist and better communicate the struggle that belongs to so many.
I primarily create single channel work, utilizing abstracted forms, experimental documentary techniques, and occasional performances to convey my message. My other interests include familial relationships, traditions, loss & grieving, nature, and death.

Statement
I work primarily in video because it is an explicit, direct tool for communication. I am drawn to it because of its immediate access, and its ability to integrate into everyday life. It is a connective medium, an instigator of the interpersonal, and ultimately a tool for bringing warm bodies together.
Currently, I am interested in the re-arrangement of fixed sign systems, and in particular, in interrogating the relationship between rhetoric and hierarchies of power. I use recombinant forms of image and text to re-generate meaning out of exhausted language and to call into question how things are named and valued. Based around writing, the new work touches on our complex relationship to the natural world and its echoes in human interpersonal relationships. I use various strategies; animation, found-footage, and live action, to contest both the delivery and meaning of mainstream messages.
I would like to evolve my practice into a balance of video work, curatorial projects and critical writing.
