ART 253 Survey of Film History
Growth of Film from its origin. Technical, economic, and social influence on cinema: development of film as an art.
FIL 122 Sound / Image
Development of the studentŐs understanding and approach to the critical and practical challenges of working creatively with image and sound.
* Non-majors with the intention of transferring into the Film Program should register for this course. Permission of the course instructor is required. This course is usually offered only in the Spring semester.
FIL 221 Cinematic Modes of Production
Introduction to the various codes and forms that work at the mainstream and borders of cinematic production, such as documentary, experimental, animation, and fictional narrative, and the techniques of 16mm filmmaking.
Prerequisite: FIL122
FIL 228 Film Scriptwriting
Introductory course to the basic elements of film scripting: dramatic fundamentals, screenplay format, narrative strategies, character creation, and dialogue development.
Prerequisite: FIL122 or by permission of instructor
FIL 226 Survey of Film Theorybr /> Readings in classical film theory and criticism and critical works discussed in relation to film screening.
Prerequisite: ART 253
FIL 200 Storytelling production
Exploration of cinematic storytelling through the production of a short 16mm narrative film.
Prerequisite: FIL221
FIL 225 Problems of Film Perception
A survey of major ideas of visual and audio perception. These ideas will be related to semiotic systems and how filmic meaning is encoded and decoded and/or recorded by the spectator.
Prerequisite: ART 253
ART 250 Filmmaking: Cinematic Modes
Topics will focus around codes and forms that work at the mainstream and borders of cinematic production. May be repeated for credit.
FIL 321 Filmmaking: Animation
Laboratory in cel, object animation and titling preparation, and execution. Special effects. Mattes. Rotoscoping. Bipack techniques.

FIL 322 Cinematic Modes Workshop
Advanced exploration of cinematic modes through the creation of short film(s) and critical evaluation of the process. A 16mm release print is required upon completion of this course.
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Film Majors or by permission of instructor. May be repeated for credit.
FIL 329 Sound Design
Principles of sound and acoustics as related to recording audio for film with equal treatment given to film sound design theory and practice in both analogue and digital forms of production assemblage and editing.
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Film Majors or by permission of instructor
FIL 523 Cinema Acting and Directing
Exercises in filming fictional dramatic scripts.
Prerequisite: DRA105 - Acting for Non Majors, DRA305 - Advanced Acting for Non-majors, Junior or Senior Film Majors or by permission of instructor
FIL 222 Post-Production Workshop
Introduction to various means of organizing and manipulating images and sound by both analogue and non-linear means.
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior Film Majors or by permission of instructor
FIL 324 Scriptwriting Workshop
Offers students further opportunity to develop scriptwriting skills. Special attention on story, character development, and narrative strategies. A portfolio-quality script for a feature-length film or for the senior project will be written.
Prerequisite: FIL 228, Junior or Senior Film Majors or by permission of instructor
FIL 360 Topics in Film Culture
Interaction between film and society. Specific issues, such as genre, auteur, ideology, spectatorship, and technology.
Prerequisite: ART 253 or permission by instructor. May be repeated for credit.
FIL 420 Filmmaking: Senior Project
Year-long production of a film demonstrating technical and artistic skills acquired in the film program. An accepted proposal required.
Prerequisite: Senior Film Majors by permission of Film Faculty.
FIL 520 Film Studies Seminar
Advanced topics relating a focused set of critical and theoretical questions to a specific film or group of films. For graduate and advanced undergraduate students.
Prerequisite: Senior Film Majors or by permission of instructor
FIL 620 Filmmaking: Graduate Project
First year graduate filmmaking. Required of all M.F.A. film candidates. Meets weekly. Individual and group filmmaking projects.
Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
FIL 623 Film Script Writing
Students produce scripts based on problems of adaptation as well as original work. Problems in dramatic structure, diegesis and dialogue.
Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
FIL 625 Introduction to Film Theory and Criticism
Individual and group graduate research projects in topics of film theory and criticism.
Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
FIL 626 Problems of Film Perception
Additional graduate research in topics of film theory. Required of all M.F.A. candidates.
Prerequisite: FIL 625 or permission of instructor.
FIL 720 Filmmaking: Graduate Project
Advanced graduate filmmaking, required of all M.F.A. candidates. Meets weekly. Individual and group filmmaking projects.
Prerequisite: FIL 620, permission of instructor.
FIL 996 Final Presentation
Written statement to accompany final project, culminating in oral examination for M.F.A. degree. Taken during final semester upon advisor's approval.
FIL 997 Master's Thesis
Formal master's thesis. Written document exhibiting substantive and original research. Planned under direction of major departmental advisor.
